Fix “Failed to connect to server; verify SBOCOMMON database” Error During SAP HANA/SQL Database Upgrade

How to Fix “Failed to connect to server; verify SBOCOMMON database” Error During SAP HANA/SQL Database Upgrade

🎯 Issue Description

During the upgrade process of the HANA or SQL database in SAP Business One, the following error may occur:

“Failed to connect to server; enter a valid server name, user ID, and password. Verify that you have the SBOCOMMON database and try again.”

This error indicates that the upgrade tool is unable to establish a proper connection with the database server, typically due to user session, cache, or permission issues.

Solution Steps

Follow the steps below in sequence to resolve this issue:

🔹 Step 1: Switch to a Different RDP User Account

Purpose:
A corrupted or misconfigured user profile may prevent the upgrade tool from connecting to the server.

Action:

  1. Log out of the current Remote Desktop session.
  2. Log in using a different RDP user account with administrative rights and access to SAP upgrade utilities.
  3. Re-run the upgrade process.

Note:
If the issue does not occur with the new user, the problem is likely tied to profile-specific settings or temporary files.

🔹 Step 2: Clear SAP Temporary Files (First copy these temp file and paste other location)

Purpose:
Cached or corrupted temporary files in the user's local directory can interfere with upgrade processes and authentication.

Action:

  1. Open File Explorer on the affected user's RDP session.
  2. Navigate to the following folder:

C:\Users\<AffectedUsername>\AppData\Local\Temp\sap\

Replace <AffectedUsername> with the actual Windows username experiencing the issue.

  1. Delete all files and folders under this path.

Caution:

  • Do not delete files outside the sap subfolder.
  • Make sure SAP applications are closed before performing this action.

⚠️ Important Notes & Best Practices

  • 🛡️ Backup & Downtime: Always ensure proper backups of the system and database are in place. Schedule downtime if working in a live/production environment.
  • 👤 Permissions: Ensure the user account has sufficient privileges to access the database server and perform upgrades.
  • 🗂️ Database Check: Double-check that the SBOCOMMON database exists and is accessible from the machine running the upgrade.
  • 🌐 Network Access: Verify that there are no firewall or network issues blocking connectivity to the database server.

Result Expected

After performing the steps above, the upgrade tool should be able to connect to the database server successfully, and the upgrade process should proceed without the connection error.
